What happens at the surface of the tank is just as important as what happens below. If floated sludge (scum) is not removed quickly and consistently, it can break apart and sink, causing secondary pollution.

* Automate the skimming process: Modern DAFs come with automated skimmers and liquid level controllers. Ensure these are calibrated correctly so that sludge is removed continuously or at optimized intervals.
